# Double Firing: where tradition meets technology
By Herberia
In the world of Italian ceramics, **double firing** represents the perfect balance between **technique and beauty**.
A process born from experience and research, capable of enhancing every detail with brilliant colours, refined surfaces, and high-precision decorations.
Behind every tile lies a complex and fascinating production journey, where artisanal tradition merges with cutting-edge technology to create wall coverings that speak of **style, personality and quality**.
#### **Technology, quality and design: the leadership of the [Moma Group](https://www.gruppomoma.com/en)**
The **Moma Group**, of which Herberia is part, is today the leading Italian producer of double-firing wall tiles and among the largest in Europe.
A position achieved over time through a clear vision: to combine **innovation, design and reliability**.
With a production capacity exceeding **12.5 million m² per year**, Moma offers top-quality ceramic surfaces, carefully crafted at every stage and designed to meet the needs of contemporary interior design.
Double firing involves **two distinct stages of firing**:
- the first transforms the raw mixture into the **biscuit**, a solid and resistant ceramic base;
- the second consolidates **glazes and decorations**, giving the surface its unique brilliance and definition.
This technique is used exclusively for **interior wall coverings**, particularly in **bathrooms and kitchens**, where aesthetic performance and customisation are essential elements of design.
#### **Research at the heart of innovation**
Every new collection begins in Moma’s technical laboratory — the true **beating heart of innovation**.
Here, technical expertise and creativity work side by side in a process that starts from **trend analysis** and leads to the development of **bases, decorations, textures and glazes**.
The careful selection of raw materials, the testing of new finishes, and continuous quality control ensure reproducible, reliable products that remain in tune with contemporary taste.
It is a daily commitment to research — turning experience into **industrial and stylistic excellence**.
#### **The distinctive qualities of an exclusive choice**
Choosing double firing means choosing a **product unlike any other**.
Its light, fine clays make it ideal for bright and elegant interiors.
Thanks to **rectification on the biscuit** — performed before glazing — the tiles are easier to install, more resistant, and free from the sharp edges typical of post-firing rectified products.
Moreover, the technique allows for **reduced thicknesses**, resulting in lighter tiles and greater transport efficiency, while achieving aesthetic effects and graphic precision that **porcelain stoneware cannot match**.
An aesthetic and functional choice, perfect for those who seek surfaces that combine **elegance, precision and design versatility**.
#### **An advanced production process**
The double-firing production cycle at Moma is the result of a seamless integration of **craftsmanship and advanced technology**.
From the preparation of the mixture in silos to the **first firing of the biscuit**, every stage is meticulously controlled.
Next comes **digital glazing and decoration**, carried out using state-of-the-art high-definition inkjet heads and an innovative recognition system that automatically aligns the graphic design with the tile structure, ensuring flawless visual continuity across surfaces.
The **second firing** vitrifies the glaze, making the surface smooth, glossy and completely waterproof.
The process concludes with **automated quality control**, managed by artificial intelligence systems such as **Qualitron**, which inspect every single tile to ensure absolute standards of excellence.
#### **Tradition, technology and beauty**
Choosing Herberia and the Moma world means choosing a story built on **continuous innovation, tailor-made design and certified quality**.
For years, we have been transforming our experience into ceramics that unite aesthetics and performance, driven by a vision where **technology enhances tradition**.
